Melbourne Heart FC revealed the winning entry of its fan-designed alternative third kit, manufactured by the Club’s kit sponsor Kappa and sponsored by MatchWorks.

Worn by returning Qantas Socceroo Richard Garcia, the design stimulated interested across social media and at a press conference held following training this afternoon.

"It's very nice indeed," Garcia said. "It's a great way to get the fans involved."

The alternative strip will be worn by the Club’s Hyundai A-League side for a one-off occasion against Perth Glory FC in the round 20 clash at AAMI Park on 9 February 2013.

Kappa produced the winning entry, designed by one of Heart’s foundation members, who goes by the name Sam Hernandez, which primarily utilised a charcoal colour palate, with a hooped design and a red and white trimming on the sleeve.

Heart Chief Executive Officer Scott Munn acknowledged the contribution from MatchWorks, Heart’s away jersey sponsor, for sponsoring the initiative.

“With the support of MatchWorks, this competition has been made possible and we have been able to reward our fans through their dedication to the Club,” Munn said.

The competition, which was also run last season, gives Heart members the unique opportunity to show their true colours as part of the Club’s monthly No.12 Best Fan competition, and have the chance to leave their mark on the first team.

Sam, who also entered last season and made the top three, was delighted his winning entry was selected for the 2012-13 season.

"I entered the competition last season and missed out, finishing in the top three; however, I think my entry this year was much stronger,” Sam said.

“The colour represents the Club’s great supporters, with the Yarraside having openly adopted charcoal as the Club’s unofficial third colour, while the detailing and trim on the kit adds a depth of class.

“I'd just like to thank the club and Kappa for the initiative, allowing fans to engage with the club and it's amazing to think that the boys will be wearing my kit on the pitch."

The entries were whittled down to the top three, with the winner selected by the team’s Head Coach John Aloisi and captain Fred.

Sam will receive a version of the completed jersey, signed by the whole Melbourne Heart FC team.

It's just a normal Kappa shirt but he's wearing two sizes too big.

It's a really nice shirt but the collar looks really awkward. As Peter said above, it'd look a lot nicer with a red/white v-neck. Anything that doesn't look like it's choking the players would be cool, though!
