Having been edged out of a place in West Germany for Euro 88 months earlier, Yugoslavia were keen to lay down a marker in their opening qualifying match of the campaign and returned home from Glasgow with a solid 1-1 draw after Srecko Katanec levelled Mo Johnston's 17th minute opener late in the first half. Janković was named as a substitute for match but came on towards the end of the game to help close the result in the final few minutes. A star for both Red Star and Real Madrid, Janković represented the country 12 times between 1986 and 1989 before retiring with Anderlecht in 1990.
