A shock defeat to Saudi Arabia meant that Paul Van Himst's men actually progressed to the next round in 3rd place and therefore faced the holders Germany who saw them off 3-2. Verlinden together with Filip De Wilde gave back-up to iconic keeper Michel Preud'homme at the tournament and the Club Brugge hero did not see any action. Nicknamed 'De Muur' the goalie also went to the '98 World Cup before finally winning his first and only cap for Belgium in '99. At club level he became the then oldest player to play in the Champions League in 2003 and spent an incredible 16 years with the Blauw-Zwart's.
