Seattle Sounders FC unveiled its new away kit for the 2021-2022 Major League Soccer seasons, a vibrant and original design paying homage to legendary musical artist and Seattle native Jimi Hendrix.

Officially dubbed The Jimi Hendrix Kit, the dynamic purple, orange and yellow uniform was inspired by Hendrix’s love of colour and psychedelic patterns.

The design is part of MLS and adidas’ “Community Kit” line, introduced this season to allow clubs the opportunity to create secondary kits rooted in individual meaning for each team. The Jimi Hendrix Kit was conceived as a way for Sounders FC to not only honour Hendrix and his place as a Seattle icon, but, on a larger scale, to recognize and celebrate the meaningful principles of peace, love and giving for which Hendrix stood.

The kit itself is one of the most unique designs Sounders FC has ever showcased, standing out even at first glance, but then replete with distinctive detailing on closer inspection. The primary purple colour is accented with bright orange and yellow and features a swirling, psychedelic pattern – a nod to Hendrix’s affinity for vivid colours and patterns, highlighted on his album covers and through his personal style.

A reproduction of Hendrix’s authentic signature is stamped on the bottom left corner of each jersey front, and the neck tape features lyrics from his “Straight Ahead,” reproduced from his own handwritten copy of the song. The line reads, “We got to stand, side by side,” and signifies Sounders FC’s belief in the importance of coming together, both on the pitch as supporters, fans, players and coaches stand together on matchdays, but also in the community and as citizens of the wider world.

The right jersey sleeve features the logo of the Puyallup Tribe, an original steward of land throughout what is now known as the Puget Sound. The tribe and its Emerald Queen Casino recently signed a multi-year partnership with the Rave Green.

The Sounders will only be donating up to $50,000 from sales of this jersey to their selected charities. This jersey is supposed to be a commemorative piece about bringing communities together, and yet in the background the city is destroying the truth of Jimi's origins and continuing to gentrify neighborhoods. Jimi was never fond of his hometown either, so what sense does this even make?

In the end, this is nothing more a Cadbury packaging with Jimi's namesake on it to try and make a quick buck during a pandemic. Disgusting.

I am usually not a fan of "fun" football kits, but this one is a classic already. They had me at "Jimi"...

I generally don't think the "one kit supplier for the entire league" is a good idea, since it does not open up for creativity and individuality (many clubs using the same templates). So more individuality is a welcome move in the MLS.
