In June 2022, Aston Villa announced the start of a process to review their Club visually, including exploring a redesign of the current Club crest.
Following an extensive period of fan consultation, creative exploration and crafting, two crest designs were shortlisted, and on Friday, November 4, season ticket holders and members were presented with both options and asked to vote for the one they would prefer to be the new Club crest.
Fans were asked to choose between a design inspired by the founding story of their historic Club, in the form of a traditional gas lamp, or a more traditional, round crest which pays homage to the club's 1982 European Cup triumph. As part of the voting process, fans were also asked whether they would simply prefer to keep the current crest.

The current crest will remain in place for the remainder of the 2022/23 season, with the new crest officially replacing it for the 2023/24 season, including being in place on next season’s kits, released next summer. The crest redesign will now also be factored into an evolution of the rest of the visual identity.
