The 1992-93 season is one which is held in high regard by Aston Villa fans. Though they ended the domestic campaign trophyless, the West Midlands side gave eventual inaugural Premier League champions Manchester United a decent run for their money - beating them at Villa Park (along with a League Cup victory) and avoiding defeat at Old Trafford - and they looked very stylish doing it.
One of several Umbro lace-up shirts which featured on the iconic Sky Sports poster celebrating English football’s new dawn, the Villains’ effort had further retro stylings, as a modernisation of the outfit worn 100 years earlier in 1892.
With Mita Copiers sponsorship, angular number font and occasionally coupled with alternative claret socks and blue shorts from a change kit, Paul McGrath’s PFA Players’ Player of the Year-winning season was played in sartorial splendour.
