An in-depth look: Tottenham Hotspur 1987–89 Home Kit #thfc #tottenhamhotspur #kitdesign

The 1987-89 Hummel Tottenham Hotspur Home kit is one of the most infamous in the history of English football. Ironically, its infamy doesn’t come by way of either of its seasons in official use.

Debuted in Spurs’ 1987 FA Cup Final defeat to Coventry City, some players wore the shirt with a sponsor - the alcohol brand, Holsten - and on others it was nowhere to be seen.

This administrative error was so noticeable that a rival brewery advertised that they “bet [a player lacking in sponsorship] drinks Carling Black Label!”

That said, the classy kit with neat patterned shadow jacquard was a sartorial triumph, and looked great worn as traditional, all-white or with navy socks. This lovely True Colours focus details the variations - including to the elusive sponsor when it finally appeared in earnest!
