Mark Hateley was transferred to A.C. Milan on 28 June 1984 for a fee of £1 million. On 28 October 1984, he scored a crucial and memorable winning goal in the Milan Derby, securing a 2-1 victory against Inter Milan with a powerful header that saw him outdo his former Milan teammate Fulvio Collovati. This was Milan's first Derby win in six years.
