Southampton sign Umbro deal

Umbro will be the official supplier of all Saints playing and training kit for the next five seasons from 2008/09 through to 2012/13.

The deal marks the end of the club's own brand manufacturing policy which has been in place since 1999 as Saints join Umbro's impressive list of UK clubs which includes Everton, Wigan, Glasgow Rangers, Blackburn Rovers, Heart of Midlothian, West Bromwich Albion, Birmingham City, West Ham United, Hull City, Nottingham Forest, Sunderland, Lincoln City, Linfield and Glentoran.

Umbro are also kit manufacturers for the national teams of England, Sweden, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and Norway.

Saints Head of Retail Leighton Mitchell said: " We are delighted to be teaming up with a quality Sportswear manufacturer such as Umbro.
"They are without doubt one of the market leaders in kit design and innovation and the quality of their products is first class. "They bring with them a wealth of experience as well as a football heritage that is second to none."

Saints Chairman Leon Crouch added "It is a great testament to the club that Umbro were keen to become our official kit
supplier. "It became clear from our initial meetings that we both shared the common goals of producing innovative and high quality kits for our players and supporters alike. We look forward to a long and successful partnership both on and off the field."

Umbro also become a Patron Saint as part of the club's new sponsorship programme, joining Cedar and Carlsberg. UMBRO's Director of Football, Simon Marsh said "I'm
delighted to have added Southampton Football Club to our existing portfolio of contracted clubs here in the UK."
"We created a strategy some two years ago which was geared towards creating a greater presence for the brand in its domestic market. By securing a five year deal with Southampton FC will nsure the brand has a presence on the south coast for the foreseeable future and further enhances the brands geographical representation within the United Kingdom."

" We very much look forward to the next five years and hopefully this will be a platform for the Club to go on and achieve greater success both on and off the field in the future." Details of the exciting new kits, including the new Home strip, Away strip and training wear and other Umbro products will be announced on saintsfc.co.uk in the
spring.

    At last! Has any team that made it\'s own shirts in the modern era actually had success on or off the field once they did so? When Ipswich went over to their Punch own brand they sank like a stone and so did Saints.

    Now we will have a real kit, and perhaps something with a nod to the late seventies Admiral classic or perhaps the broad stripe Patrick Keegan era would be nice.

    Finally some proper shirts for the Saints!
    Perhaps now it might be available outside of Southampton as well?
