CSKA Sofia 1973-74 player shirt believed to have been match worn by Zafirov in the European Cup Second Round 2nd leg match against Ajax played at Natsionalen Stadion Vasil Levski on the 7th November 1973.
Ever wondered who ended Ajax's run of 3 consecutive European Cup triumphs? The answer is CSKA Sofia and it happened in this match when this incredible shirt was worn by the Bulgaria international full back Zafirov.
CSKA's chances did not look good when they lost 1-0 in Amsterdam but on a freezing night in Sofia and after extra time the unthinkable happened and Ajax were out. Marashliev put the hosts ahead and with the aggregate score tied the game continued after the 90 minutes were up. The winner was dramatically found with only minutes to spare by substitute Mihailov and Nikola Kovatchev's men had done it. Unfortunately they met Bayern Munich in the next round who ended the dream and went on to win the trophy themselves. Zafirov won 9 Bulgarian league titles in his longstanding career with the club and also starred at the 1974 World Cup on the international stage.
