The match need not have gone ahead really with neither team in a position to qualify for the Finals regardless of the result here. And Portugal will have wished it hadn't by the end going down 4-1 with Dalglish, Archibald, Andy Gray and Gemmill all on the scoresheet for the hosts. Fernando Gomes got a consolation for the visitors and Frasco played for 77 minutes before being withdrawn for Carlos Manuel. The two sides would meet again in October in World Cup Qualification, Portugal would have a new kit by then and were able to get a 0-0 draw on that occasion. The 5ft 6in midfielder Frasco spent 11 years of his career with FC Porto and represented his country 23 times.
