Romania had the best of the early exchanges with a young Gheorghe Hagi rattling Shilton's crossbar but it was the Three Lions who took the lead midway through the first half through Hoddle. The Tricolorii were not deterred though and Cămătaru showed great pace and guile to net an equaliser in the 60th minute and the match ended all square at 1-1. Despite their impressive showings against England Romania who had qualified for their first tourmament since 1970 in Euro '84 were edged out into 3rd place in the group by Northern Ireland. Cămătaru had a superb scoring record for Craiova and was soon snapped up by Dinamo Bucharest, the centre forward represented his country 73 times in total scoring 21 goals and would be in the squad 5 years later when they did make it to Italia '90.
