Adidas 1988 Ireland Match Worn European Championship Home Shirt

Ireland 1988 player shirt by Adidas believed to have been match worn by Aldridge in the Euro 88 Group 2 match against Holland played at Parkstadion, Gelsenkirchen on the 18th June 1988.

A place in the Semi Finals was up for grabs here for Jack Charlton's men. After a famous victory over England in Stuttgart and a hard-fought draw with the Soviet Union another point against the Dutch would be enough to send them through to an unexpected Semi against the hosts in their first ever appearance at a Euros.

It was a tense and tight affair and the scoreline remained at 0-0 until 8 minutes from time when cruelly a bizarre Wim Kieft header gave Holland a priceless lead. The underdogs could not find an equaliser and the dream was over but the team could be proud of a valiant effort with their fans continuing to sing even after the full-time whistle had been blown. There could be no shame in losing to what in historical teams goes down as one of the all-time great sides. Aldridge partnered captain Frank Stapleton up front and played the full match. The trusty goalscorer had made his debut two years earlier and went on to wear the green shirt 69 times in total, bagging 19 and also starring at World Cup '90 & '94.
