The reigning European Champions had been surprisingly held by Egpyt in their opening game before drawing also with England 0-0 in Cagliari. Holland had dumped Ireland out at this stage in Euro '88 but Jack Charlton's men held firm here and came back to equalise after Ruud Gullit had put the Dutch ahead in the first half.

This meant that both Ireland and the Netherlands finished the group stage with identical records and their final ranking had to be determind by drawing lots, the Irish won and thus finished 2nd place forcing Holland into another showdown with bitter rivals West Germany. That game ended in an infamous defeat after Voller and Rijkaard were sent off. Gillhaus was drafted into the team following the draw with Egypt to give van Basten some support and played 90 minutes against England and Ireland before returning to the bench for the clash with the German's. The former PSV European Cup winner represented his country just 9 times scoring twice.
