The Dutch champions really needed a win here to keep their faint hopes of a place in the Final alive but they were soon extinguished as Mikael Nilsson fired home a free-kick inside 2 minutes and the hosts romped to a 3-0 victory. Numan, a new signing from FC Twente, was wearing the #10 shirt ahead of Wim Kieft for this match but had to go off injured after only 13 minutes. The #88 European champions went on to finish bottom of the group picking up only one point. Numan established himself as a first team regular in Eindhoven though, settling in well and making 8 appearances in the competition in total this year. He went on to make the left back spot his own and later became club captain while also going to four major international tournaments with Holland.
