Rangers had defeated Lyngby and Leeds United to qualify for the first ever group stage of the new Champions League format.
At this stage of the competition a Champions League sleeve patch was introduced and sponsors logos were prohibited by UEFA. The Gers were drawn in a group with Marseille, CSKA Moscow and Club Brugge and came incredibly close to reaching the Final. Walter Smith's men did not lose a match and if results had have gone differently on the final matchday it would have been them and not Marseille who went through to play AC Milan in Munich. The side wore this classic Adidas Equipment design home shirt to this specification in 5 out of the 6 group games and with Mykhaylychenko playing twice as #11 and Peter Huistra wearing it in the other 3 games. A real classic from when Rangers came so close to reaching the Final of the first ever Champions League.
