Ireland 1992 player shirt by Adidas believed to have been issued to Kelly for the 1992 US Cup which took place between May and June.
This was the inaugural edition of the tournament which would run annually except for '94 and '98 until 2000. The United States were the hosts with Italy and Portugal the other participants.
The kits used in the tournament featured numbers on the front of the shirts which had not been seen on an Ireland jersey ever previously. The Boys in Green were still wearing the same design that had famously been used at Italia 90 but now with the new FAI crest which would last until 2004. Jack Charlton's men wore the home kit in the opening match against the USA when after taking the lead they were stunned by the hosts who came back to win 3-1 in Washington DC. It was used again in a 2-0 defeat to Italy in Foxborough four days later when Signori and Costacurta scored for a star-studded Azzurri before the away kit was given a run out for the final encounter with Portugal where the side ended on a high with a 2-0 victory secured by goals from Staunton and Coyne. Kelly came on as a substitute against Italy and then started the Portugal game. The striker was a part of the Ireland squad for 10 years between 88-98 and despite winning only 26 caps he went to 3 major tournaments and scored 9 goals for his country.
