With the golden generation coming through the side were in the hunt to reach only their second World Cup Finals since 1966. The Seleção kicked off their campaign with a tough trip to Scotland who had qualified for the last five World Cup's. It was a hard fought game and Carlos Queiroz's men could be satisfied with a 0-0 stalemate. Paulo Madeira was an unused substitute on the night having only made his international debut the year before. The centre back went on to win 25 caps and would be in the squad for Euro '96
