Adidas 1994 Ireland Match Issue World Cup Away Shirt

Ireland 1994 player shirt by Adidas believed to have been issued to Aldridge for the 1994 World Cup Round of 16 match against Holland played at Citrus Bowl, Orlando on the 4th July '94.

Aldridge was an unused substitute as Ireland lost out 2-0 to the Dutch who won thanks to first half goals by Bergkamp and Jonk. It was the same venue and the same soaring temperatures as the group match with Mexico when John Aldridge and Jack Charlton famously lost their cool.

Aldo was waiting to come on as a sub but grew impatient and launched into a classic expletive-laden tirade at the officials before composing himself to pull a goal back which was crucial in earning Ireland qualification from the group. Here Phil Babb missed a late chance and McGrath had a last minute effort ruled out but Holland were deserved winners and had kept it conservative in the second half. The defeat ended a magical World Cup adventure that included the historic victory over Italy. The trusty goalscorer Aldridge was taken to USA for his valuable tournament experience having starred at Euro 88 and Italia '90. It would be his last ever tournament although he played on until '96 retiring with 69 caps and 19 goals to his name.
