The Dutch had only just scraped through thanks to a late Patrick Kluivert goal in the defeat to England but a tight contest ensued up on Merseyside. The match ended in a 0-0 stalemate after both 90 and 120 minutes and so was decided by a penalty shoot-out. Aimé Jacquet's men held their nerve to win 5-4 after Seedorf missed for Holland and went through to the Semi Finals before themselves losing on spot kicks at the hands of surprise package the Czech Republic. Madar was an unused substitute for the match and only won 3 caps for France but was snapped up by Deportivo la Coruna after this tournament before later playing for Everton. This classic white design was worn in three games at Euro 96 in total against Spain, Holland and the Czech's although the sleeve patches were worn the other way around in the Spain game.
