The gold star had not yet been added to this iconic shirt though, this is the only game it was played in following the triumph where it is not present and it appeared on the away kit in the next fixture against Iceland in September. The skippe Deschamps started the game but played on the first half here in order to rest up for the start of the upcoming Serie A season. The match itself was a thriller with the newly crowned World Champions really put through their paces by the hosts. Laslandes put Les Bleus ahead early on but Haas equalised before half-time and when Leboeuf gave away a penalty which Vastic converted it looked like a shock was on the cards. Thankfully Alain Boghossian equalised to spare Roger Lemerre's blushes in his first game in charge. Deschamps wore the captains armband from 1996 onwards and represented his country over 100 times, also lifting the European Championship two years later.
