Both teams played in their away colours Paris with Lierse defender Van Meir an unused substitute. Belgium would go on to draw all of their games at France 98 and the 3 points were not enough to get them through to the Round of 16. Despite being a defender Van Meir's scoring record was incredible, he'd hit 17 in 96-97 and was again Lierse's top scorer going into this World Cup. For Belgium he made 34 appearances but only managed the one goal.
