Belgium would go on to draw all of their games at France 98 and the 3 points were not enough to get them through to the Round of 16. Despite being a defender Van Meir's scoring record was incredible, he'd hit 17 in 96-97 and was again Lierse's top scorer going into this World Cup. For Belgium he made 34 appearances but only managed the one goal.
