Holland 1996 player shirt believed to have been issued to Bogarde for the Euro 96 Group A match against Switzerland played at Villa Park on the 13th June 1996.
This was the sides second match at the tournament after drawing 0-0 with Scotland in their opening game. Bogarde played the full match but wore a short sleeved shirt as Guus Hiddink's men put themselves in a strong position in the group with a 2-0 victory.
Jordi Cruyff and Dennis Bergkamp got the goals which game well into the second half. This was the last time the Oranje played at the tournament without wearing sleeve patches and it was the only appearance at Euro 96 for this superb design away kit. The side came close to not making the Quarter Finals though after a hammering at Wembley against the hosts next time out but Patrick Kluivert's consolation was enough to take them through on goal difference, although they would not make it past the French who triumphed on penalties. Bogarde was a defensive stalwart of the great Ajax team that won the Champions League in '95 and had reached the Final again just before Euro '96 and he was ever present in all of Holland's matches at the tournament. After spells at AC Milan, Barcelona and Chelsea the centre back made his 20th and final international appearance in 2000.
