The rising star of the tournament Cristiano Ronaldo put Portugal ahead at half-time and when Maniche curled in a spectacular effort from an incredible angle it looked like Holland's hopes of a repeat of their Euro 88 triumph were over. But then a Jorge Andrade own goal gave Dick Advocaat's men a lifeline and they put the pressure on although an equaliser just could not be found. This proved to be David's last ever major international appearance after starring at Euro 96 and 00 and France '98. One of the greatest midfielders of his generation Davids enjoyed a stellar career most notably with Ajax and Juventus, winning 6 league titles in all as well as the Champions League in '95.
