The match was the second of a double header between the two sides played to celebrate the NZFA's centenary. The All Whites had lost 1-0 in Auckland and were again defeated 5 days later with Stuart Pearce and David Hirst getting the goals for the visitors.

Evans played the full match at the heart of the defence, the Oxford United defender won 56 caps in his 13 year international career. The matches with England were the sides last of the calendar year and the only time this shirt was used.
