Being on home soil made Nigeria the slight favourites and there was as expected little to choose between the two sides, a thrilling contest ensued. The visitors stormed into a 2-0 lead with Eto'o and Mboma lethal in front of goal but Chukwu pulled one back on the stroke of half-time and shortly after the break Jay-Jay Okocha found an equaliser. The match then remained tied at 2-2 at both the end of 90 minutes and extra-time and so it was to penalties. Pierre Lechantre's men famously held their nerve with Rigobert Song scoring the winning kick to lift the trophy for the third time in their history. Tchoutang was an unused substitute for the Final but did play in one of the group matches and then both the Quarter and Semi Finals. The striker made 29 appearances in total for the The Indomitable Lions scoring 6 times.
