The hosts took the lead in the 35th minute through star striker Gary Lineker but within 60 seconds Brazil were level Mirandinha and the match went on to finish 1-1. Ricardo Gomes remained on the bench as an unused substitute with Dunga #15 and Rai #17 the only players brought on by boss Carlos Alberto Silva with all of the players wearing long sleeved shirts on the night. The side went on to beat Scotland to lift the trophy. Ricardo Gomes' great form saw him snapped up by Benfica and he soon established himself as a first choice centre back winning 46 caps in total and going on to play for PSG before becoming a successful manager.
