Umbro 1997-98 Manchester United Match Issue Away Shirt

Manchester United 1997-98 player shirt by Umbro believed to have been issued to Thornley for the 1997-98 season.

The highly rated Thornley made his first team debut in 93-94 after coming through the club's youth ranks but suffered a serious injury soon after which sadly hampered his devolopment and with United going from strength to strength it was a hard enough task as it was to secure a regular starting place.

After spells on loan to Stockport and Huddersfield in 95-96 boss Alex Ferguson gave Thornley another chance and in this campaign the winger made 8 appearances in all competitions. These were 5 Premier League games, two in the FA Cup and one in the Coca-Cola Cup. This new white away kit was worn 6 times to this specification domestically and Thornley featured in one of those matches, a 1-1 draw at Upton Park against West Ham in March. The Red Devils endured a frustrating season following the departure of their leader Eric Cantona and had to settle for being runners-up in the Premier League this time around. Thornley had represented England U-21's at the Toulon Tournament in the summer of '96 but with Jesper Blomqvist on his way in to give Giggs back-up the right-footed left winger was sold to Huddersfield for 98-99.
