Featuring some foreshadowing of the great man’s look as England won the World Cup two years later, this match-worn 1964 Bobby Charlton England shirt recently sold for £22,000 at auction.

The iconic “Three Lions” crest is present and correct on the chest, the white shield contrasting with the red Bukta base along with the white number 11 on the reverse that may seem incongruous when relating to a man so associated with 9.

With a V-type - rather than crew - neck, the shirt is of a style not often seen, but the sadly now-passed knight of the British realm wore it against Portugal, scoring one goal, and this accounts for it blasting through the £10,000-15,000 estimate.

This item was sold by Graham Budd Auctions, a specialist in sporting memorabilia.
