A match-worn Argentina Home shirt from 30 plus years ago bearing a number 10 on the reverse is always going to pique interest, but this example is a curveball.
Instead of being worn by one Diego Maradona, this long-sleeved relic from the Argentines’ triumphant 1991 Copa América campaign in Chile - bundled with a winner’s medal - was actually issued to a 21-year-old Diego Simeone.
Maradona was missing from the tournament so that explains the iconically numbered example of the adidas design selling for £2,200 rather than ten, a hundred or even a thousand times as much, but the association with David Beckham-botherer - and now Atlético Madrid managerial legend - Simeone still appealed to the extent that the £1,200-1,500 estimate was surpassed.
