The new Inter Milan signing Matthaus played the full match as captain. He would go on to lead Germany to qualification to the Finals in Italy and then glory there too as they famously won the World Cup. Matthaus' form would make him the first ever FIFA World Player of the Year in 1991 and he go on to make a record 150 appearances for his nation.
