Arsenal found themselves 2-0 down inside 15 minutes after Rivaldo's penalty was followed up in less than 60 seconds by a Luis Enrique strike. Bergkamp pulled one back before half-time to give the hosts hope but the visitors pulled away again in the second half and went 4-1 up with goals from Figo and Cocu, Overmars pulled one back late on but a comeback did not materialise. Dixon played the full match in his traditional right back position as part of the classic back four alongside Adams, Keown and Winterburn. The defeat put a real spanner in the works for Arsene Wenger's men and then went on to finish 3rd place in the group and move into the UEFA Cup though they would go on to reach the Final of that competition. Dixon spent 14 glorious years at Highbury becoming part of the furniture and also winning 22 caps for England.
