But Villa, managed by former Old Trafford supremo Ron Atkinson and hero defender Paul McGrath, would dash that dream and pull off a shock against the odds here. Aston Villa led at half-time through a Dalian Atkinson strike and Dean Saunders doubled their lead in the 76th minute. There looked to be hope for the Red Devils when Mark Hughes pulled one back but when Kanchelskis handled on the light to prevent a certain goal Saunders made no mistake from the penalty spot and the trophy was Villa's. The side wore their special third shirt in the colours of Newton Heath which was released to commemorate its 100th anniversay which was used as a third kit in both 92-93 & 93-94. Bruce led the side out at Wembley as captain but was substituted in the 83rd minute for striker Brian McClair as Fergie went gung-ho for an equaliser. The centre back joined the club in '87 and was a lynch-pin of the early 90's glory team that restored United to the summit of English football.
