This was the first edition of the pre-season tournament which also included hosts Nottingham Forest and Manchester United. Chelsea had beaten Forest on penalties to reach the Final where they faced the 1995 Champions League winners.

The Blues saw off the Dutch giants in impressive fashion with Wise and Petrescu getting the goals in the first half to seal a 2-0 win. Spencer had played in the first match but was an unused substitute in the Final. The 5 ft 6 in striker spent 5 years at Stamford Bridge and also won 14 caps for Scotland.
