Going, Going, Gone - Nestor Clausen's Argentina 1986 World Cup Jersey

Recently reaching a closing bid of £22,000 at auction, this Argentina shirt from the (in)famous 1986 World Cup quarter-final win over England is a footballing artefact with few equals.

The high price - making a mockery of the £2,600-3,000 estimate - is itself dwarfed by the £7.1 million hammer price paid for Diego Maradona’s shirt from the Mexico ’86 match, with the squad member this example was made up for, number 8 Nestor Clausen, not making the matchday 16.

The emergency deployment of the Le Coq Sportif teamwear item - complete with archaic crest - holds a special place in footballing folklore due to being involved in Maradona’s “Hand of God” and “Goal of the Century” events, which occurred mere minutes apart.

This item was sold by Graham Budd Auctions, a specialist in sporting memorabilia.
