This design was worn by Mühren in the three friendly games in 1988 prior to the tournament itself. The Oranje drew 2-2 at Wembley, were shocked by Bulgaria in Rotterdam and beat Romania in Amsterdam to complete a mixed build-up to the Finals. A special kit was released for Euro 88 and worn in every game there with this design then returning for the 1990 World Cup qualifying campaign. The Euro 88 triumph capped a career of remarkable success for Mühren in which at club level he became one of only six players to win all of the international club competitions, with all but the UEFA Cup won with Ajax, that trophy he picked up while at Ipswich Town.
