1982/83 Umbro Catalogue Pages #umbro #footballshirt #vintagefootball

For many a football kit geek, Umbro is the daddy. However, for some reason their teamwear, even for the double diamond devotee, doesn’t hold the same clout and cachet as that of the likes of Nike and adidas.

These catalogue pages displaying the 1982-83 range may have us questioning the historical element to that stance.

The v-necked shirts, available in a significant variety of colourways, including with stripes (“Championship”) and pinstripes (“City”), work well when flavoured with a suggestion of the iconic - Argentina, Liverpool Home and Away, Barcelona... - but come into their own when, in the “United” selection, shoulder piping and twin stripe details are added to the neck and cuffs.

Advertised and pictured on the collared shirts are, oddly, front matchday squad numbers - were these a Sunday league staple? And the catalogue wouldn’t be complete without fetching goalkeeper kit options, gloves, and “Lispro Shinguards”, which are subversively advertised by way of a player bedecked in Umbro suffering an injury thanks to his eschewment of said accoutrements.

Thanks to Jimmy from The Glove Bag - tgbjimmy on Twitter - for bringing this to our attention.
