It was the first major international tournament where players names were worn on the back of their shirts and the games Lineker played at Euro 92 are the only times in his long and illustrious career that he played with his name on his shirt in a competitive match. Unfortunately it did not work out for Graham Taylor's men here in Sweden, after drawing with Denmark and France the side took the lead in Solna against the hosts before Brolin and Dahlin famously teamed up to devastating effect and with Lineker infamously subbed for Alan Smith in what was to be his last ever appearance it was a tournament of bad memories for England fans. Lineker's 80th and final international appearance was on that pitch in Solna, still agonisingly one goal short of matching Bobby Charlton's all-time scoring record. After dazzling with prolific goalscoring form for Leicester, Everton, Barcelona and Spurs Lineker took over for the exotic climes of the J.League with Nagoya Grampus Eight before retiring in '94.
