Manchester United 1996-97 player shirt by Umbro believed to have been issued to Thornley for the 1996-97 Champions League campaign.
The highly rated Thornley made his first team debut in 93-94 after coming through the club's youth ranks but suffered a serious injury soon after which sadly hampered his devolopment and with United going from strength to strength it was a hard enough task as it was to secure a regular starting place.
After spells on loan to Stockport and Huddersfield in 95-96 boss Alex Ferguson gave Thornley another chance in this campaign and the winger made 4 appearances, although all were in domestic competition. He was an unused subtitute in the Champions League though in the away trip to Fenerbahce which United won 2-0. The Red Devils went on to retain their Premier League crown but were frustrated in Europe at the Semi Final stage of the Champions League by Borussia Dortmund. Thornley represented England U-21's at the Toulon Tournament in the summer of '96 and went on to play 8 more times for United in 97-98 before leaving to join Huddersfield.
